'Freedom cow' now on parade

A COUPLE living at the Boschenmeer Estate will no longer have to mow their lawn and they will never run out of milk.
Or at least, that is what passers-by say when they see the cow on parade in the yard belonging to Peter and Danielle Simons.
The cow however, serves a much nobler purpose. Peter bought the Freedom cow, painted by South African artist Portchie, after it had “grazed” in the Waterfront with the rest of the herd.
The fibreglass cows, decorated by South African artists, were moved to Johannesburg earlier this year, and will be sold on auction on June 26. The funds will go towards the Childhood Cancer Foundation. Peter, who resides in Paarl during the summer months, returns to Holland this week. With his connections with cancer clinics in the Netherlands, he managed to purchase a cow before the auction. The couple chose that particular colourful cow, named Freedom, because the painting with flat land, trees and flowers and kites flying in the blue skies, reminded them of Holland.
“She enjoyed the ride here on a bakkie,” he says.
“But she first had to spend some time in the cow hospital, where the artist performed cosmetic surgery after her stay in the Waterfront, and the many hands touching her.
“We really appreciate Boschenmeer making an exception - they are very particular about sculptures in the gardens. But they realised it was for a good cause.”
The Simons’s have secured their cow to the lawn and will leave her in attendance while they spend the European summer in Holland.
“We have many laughs when people walk past, stop to stare and make comments when they don’t realise we can see them. Our cow will stay on the lawn to entertain the strollers.”
