Corruption probe continues

WHILE a Franschhoek police investigation into alleged fraudulent activities in the Stellenbosch Municipality is “taking longer than anticipated”, the chief suspect, Councillor Gordon Pheiffer, retains his privileges.
The police swooped on Pheiffer’s home and office early in February. A computer was confiscated.
The investigation involves the alleged receipt of R21 000 in cash from a builder who had been contracted by Pheiffer for renovation of the Groendal Community Hall.
Three municipal officials - Alroy Cyster, Jacobus Davids and Herman Thiart - were also implicated in alleged misconduct.
Police confiscated computers from the Franschhoek and Stellenbosch offices of Cyster (area manager for Franschhoek) and Davids (service manager).
“The police investigation is taking longer than anticipated,” said Stellenbosch Speaker Andricus van der Westhuizen.
“Council has already appointed an attorney, Johan du Plessis, to investigate the matter. He is biding his time while the police conclude their investigation.
“Cyster and Davids have been suspended and Thiart was transferred to another section.
"Pheiffer however, has retained his allowances and privileges as councillor and is still representing his ward.”
