Chloe plays cop
2007-04-25
A DOG might be man’s proverbial best friend, but not if you are a thief looking for loot at Wellington’s SPCA kennels.
A couple parked their vehicle outside the gates to the kennels near the Industrial Park recently, and made their way to the doggie they wanted to adopt.
With their car unattended, a man crept out of the surrounding bushes and smashed a window.
The caretaker, Frank Venter, noticed the man running away, and gave chase through the shrubs. Some 200m further, Venter managed to grab hold of the fleeing suspect.
A municipal truck, passing on its way to the dump site, stopped and with the aid of the workers, Frank dragged the man onto the lorry and returned him to the kennels.
While waiting for the police, the suspect was duly locked into an empty kennel. That’s when the resident Boerboel, Chloe, appointed herself as goalkeeper.
She positioned herself in front of the “cell” and snarled at every movement inside.
When the police arrived, Chloe (rather unwillingly) surrendered her charge to the officers and returned to her main duty, that of resident guard of the animals and their protectors.
