Phenomenal art for Cultivaria
2007-05-03
PHENOMENAL - that is the only word to describe the art exhibitions planned for this year’s Cultivaria Festival from 21 to 24 September.
Johann du Plessis is the newly appointed curator/co-ordinator for the Wine and Art Route, the well-known Kevin Brand has been elected as festival artist.
Brand works on either very large scale or produces near-miniatures, using pine or casting in bronze. His work has an integrity that is about creating a solid connection between the content of the work and the process and materials appropriate to realising the subject matter.
Brand’s work has featured on the Havana and Dakar Biennales, and on group and solo show across SA and Europe. He lives and works in Cape Town.
The KWV Emporium will once again be the hub for the Wine and Arts Route, and will also contain Brand’s exhibition.
An exciting new addition, and a first for any arts festival in the country, is a representative exhibition of all artists participating in Cultivaria.
Du Plessis has made some interesting changes to the Wine and Arts Route.
For starters, all exhibitions will be hosted along Main Str, within easy reach of the festival terrain.
There will also be en-route transport available, making it easy for festival goers to view the visual art.
Among the well-known artists, are several local artists: Martie Kaden, Cornelia Smook, Selwyn Pekeur, Solomon Siko, Jeffrey Apollis, Kim Boezaart, Ralph Johnson, Hannes van Zyl and Lara Kruger.
Twelve top SA designers have also been invited to showcase their work at the Absolut Essence design exhibition, which will be curated by Lucy van Wyk.
“The aim is to create a professional platform for all visual art genres,” say Du Plessis.
A photographic exhibition, curated by Heidi Erdmann and Jaco Wiid, as well as a graphic design exhibition will contribute to make this year's Wine & Art Route a unique and unforgettable part of Cultivaria.
