FOLLOWING Cosatu’s handing over of the Elijah Barayi Award to stalward ‘Nanna’ Lizz Abrahams (81) from Paarl, in her absence at Cosatu’s congress, the Food and Allied Worker’s Union (Fawu) had a formal handover ceremony at her house last week.
The personal presentation of the award was to demonstrate the value and importance of Abrahams’s contribution to the growth and development of trade unionism, provincial scretary of Cosatu, Tony Ehrenreich, said when he visited her at her home in Tennant Street.
The Elijah Barayi Award is the highest accolade the union federation can bestow on an individual and was given to Abrahams for her dedication and invaluable contribution towards the liberation of the working class. She was the general secretary of Fawu in the 1950’s for an extensive period.
Abrahams is an icon of the struggle for labour, women’s and political rights in South Africa.
A citation written in 2002 when Abrahams received South Africa’s Order of the Counsellor of the Baobab in bronze, captured her illustrious life story.
Her career as an activist stretched over more then sixty years. The story is told in “Married to the Struggle”, the book released to coincide with her 80th birthday.
