Family dream fulfilled

A DREAM of 35 years was fulfilled earlier this month when a community centre was inaugurated in New Orleans, Paarl East.
The Gathering Wholeness Centre, under the leadership of Pastor William Morrie, the eldest of five siblings, has been a lifelong dream of the Morrie family since the plot was bought in 1972.
The centre, previously known as Huguenot Assembly of God, started in 1960 under the leadership of Pastor Morrie Senior, and their dream soon took shape.
The family envisioned a centre that would be a place of worship, a youth centre that would serve as an alternative to the negative influence that Paarl's young people face on a daily basis.
They also saw an auditorium that would be used to showcase the talents of various artists and community centred events.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the building project came to a halt and remained stagnant for 30 years, until the five siblings decided that enough time had been wasted, and in order to fulfill their dream, they needed to make haste.
The building project commenced in November 2006 and on Saturday 12 May, the first of three buildings was inaugurated.
Says Bjorgan Morrie, one of the siblings:
"We have big dreams for this centre. There are people out there in need of a safe place, and we intend on providing that for them."
Partners of the Gathering Wholeness Centre wish to complete the remaining two phases of the centre in the not so distant future.
Guest speaker Pastor Rosie Jansen of the Pentecostal Faith Mission (Newton), said at the inauguration: "They should take solace in the oasis this temporary completion offers, but know that their journey is not over yet."
