PAARL’S young golf guru, Dawie van der Walt, has turned professional in the United States.
Van der Walt (24), and old boy of Gymnasium High, is currently studying at Lamar University in Texas.
He has been included in the Ping All-America first team, one of only five South Africans on whom the honour has been bestowed.
The decision to turn professional was made public soon after the University’s Cardinals tied for third at the 110th NCAA Championship hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
Van Der Walt turned in the Cardinals’ best round of the day at 3-under par 67.
After making a bogey on the par-3 third hole, van der Walt came back with birdies on the par-4 fifth, the par-5 sixth and the par-4 ninth hole for a 2-under 33 on his back-nine.
He posted a 72-hole score of 1-over 73-73-68-67-281to tie for 22nd place.
Additionally, van der Walt was selected for the 2007 Ping All-America first team in a ceremony on the 18th green after Saturday’s final round. He is the only three-time Ping All-American in school history.
“I played solidly today and I wanted to just really go out there and enjoy the round,” said van der Walt, who graduates in Sport Psychology at the end of the year.
“I really had fun out there. There is nothing better than playing golf and I want to do this for the rest of my life.”
