Billy moves to higher pastures

Billy moves to higher pastures

Malane Bosman

FOR five years a familiar and welcoming face greeted visitors to Fairview in Agter Paarl - a proud and regal sentinel watching over activities from his Tower.

However, Billy the Goat passed away peacefully in his sleep last month, and has now joined his elders in the big Goat Tower in the sky.

A post mortem revealed no evidence of foul play. It also did not show any signs of cholesterol due to over-indulgence on the cheese and wine estate famous for its good living.

Born in August 2002, Billy was the first of the Fairview Goat Tower’s esteemed old guard to have been born and raised in the Tower.

Although his father was not around when he was growing up (he was something of a roving goat), Billy’s mother raised him to be proud of his roots and her kid grew up to be respected for always being firm, yet fair.

Billy’s mother, Madame Chevre, an esteemed herd elder in her own right, remembers Billy’s challenging journey to the top rung of the famous Tower, and is immensely proud of her kid.

All Fairview’s young bucks aspire to be a sentinel, and thankfully Billy was able to pass on much of his knowledge and life experiences to an eager and receptive young protégé before his own, sudden, passing.

Billy will be greatly missed, and condolences have been pouring in from around the globe - testament to the impact he had on visitors to the farm.

Messages of condolence or support for the family can be sent to info@fairview.co.za.
