Busy life of a DG
2007-07-12
IN his new role as District Governor of Rotary District 9350, Paarlite Alex van der Sluys has a busy life.
During his period of office he has to visit and advise 61 Rotary clubs spread over the Northern and Western Cape, Namibia and as far as Angola - all this before 15 December.
This Rotary district is the largest district in Southern Africa and the second largest in the world.
From the first day he has thrown himself into the job with total and immediate involvement, attending meetings and preparing for presentations.
Van der Sluys, who has undergone extensive training for this post, has identified a need for improved communication to help to empower clubs.
For him, an essential objective for the region during his reign will be a focus on literacy projects as part of their community service.
Previously, clubs in this district have had a positive impact on communities by establishing food gardens, health and hunger projects and literacy projects.
“What excites me about Rotary, is service above self and the ability to make a difference as a group, which would be virtually impossible on your own.”
Rotary is an international, volunteer-based service organisation that is represented in over 200 countries by about 1,2 million members. Service-minded and community orientated people volunteer their services in support of community based humanitarian projects through Rotary.
The club provides a good base for business and professional networking, personal growth and improving public speaking skills. To join a club, an individual can volunteer to become involved and may thereafter be invited to join a club.
