St Stephens celebrates

2007-07-26

NEXT week St Stephen’s Anglican Church Paarl will be celebrating 130 years of service to the community. Services during the week will be conducted by former parishioners who became priests.

Rev Courtney Sampson will lead the service on Monday at 19:30 at Noorder Paarl, Rev Jerome Cornelissen on Tuesday at the same place, Rev Clive Ontong on Wednesday 1 August at 19:30 at New Orleans and Rev Rhodes Arense on Thursday in New Orleans at 09:00.

On Sunday 5 August at 09:00, Rector Roderick Cox will lead the service at New Orleans (supported by these priests).

At 17:00 the same day at New Orleans a dedication of the upgraded church organ will take place with a recital by organist Louna Stofberg of the Paarlberg DRC. The church choir will also participate.

On Friday evening 3 August a snack dance will be held in the Paarl Community Hall with the Elginairs in attendance.

The congregation was founded in Paarl North (Lower Paarl) in 1854 by James Frederick Curlewis, who came to Paarl as a catechist in about 1852.

For the first twenty four years the church was a Chapelry of the Holy Trinity Church but on 7 August 1877, the church was consecrated by the Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Reverend William West-Jones. The congregation eventually moved due to the Group Areas Act.
