Visit brings new roof

Visit brings new roof

2007-08-16

WHILE visiting 28 orphanages in 16 days, it was the plight of Helping Hands run by Priscilla Simons in Carterville, Wellington, that touched Rachel Lamb (17) the deepest.

Rachel Lamb, daughter of Daystar Television Network founders (Marcus and Joni Lamb from Texas, USA, was recently on a mission trip in South Africa for 16 days visiting orphanages, of which some were in the Boland District.

Rachel is also the co-host of Sound Check, a contemporary Daystar music programme designed to minister to teens by profiling Christian performances and one on one interviews.

Of the 28 orphanages she visited, most were in the townships.
Rachel was deeply touched by Priscilla’s committed life of caring for her orphans as a single mother.

It was evident that Helping Hands had many needs. Fixing their roof, which was barely holding up, was priority, but because they have little to no income it is impossible.

Rachel decided to take charge of the matter and called into her parents’ live television show, which is currently the second largest Christian Television Network in the world and asked them if they could help her change the lives of the children at Helping Hands forever by helping to fix the orphanage’s roof.

Rachel’s plea did not go unanswered and on 1 August Rachel presented Priscilla with a cheque of R65 000 donated by the Daystar partners on behalf of Marcus Lamb – Rachel’s father.

Going the Distance, a local non-profit organisation run by Mabel and her husband Francois van Schalkwyk, will oversee the project of fixing the roof on behalf of Daystar.

Helping Hands is not out of the limelight yet. La Rochelle Girls’ High School has also lent a helping hand.

In 2006 the grade tens involved in the Interact committee at thje school, joined forces with Klein Nederburg Secondary School and knitted blankets for the orphans.

This project is still running and they are looking at more donors to help the orphans. It just shows that a little love and caring can go a long way. - Crystal Welgemoed
