A FORMER national director of Child Welfare, Joan Oberholzer (80), passed away in Paarl last week.
Mrs Oberholzer was a national director of the SA National Council for Child and Family Welfare for 43 years.
A qualified social worker, she first worked as a volunteer from 1960 to 1970 at the Goldfield Child Welfare Society where she served as a Vice President for the Orange Free State Child Welfare and was an elected member of the National Council’s Board of Management.
In 1970 she was appointed PR manager and fundraiser for the organisation in Johannesburg and in 1987 she was appointed as the national Executive Director, a post she held until her retirement to Paarl in 1993.
Ashley Theron, CWSA’s National Executive Director said, “Mrs Oberholzer will not only be remembered for her phenomenal unifying leadership, but also for her role as a mother to needy children of South Africa.”
She is survived by her husband, four children (including Anel Scheepers of Paarl and Rian Oberholzer, the former Chief Executive Officer for South African Rugby Football Union) and eight grandchildren.
