IN compliance with the department’s recovery plan, Desmond Tutu Secondary in Mbekweni started with extramural classes for matrics on Monday.
These classes were arranged for the matrics to try and wipe out the backlog in schoolwork caused by the Sadtu strike in May and June.
The classes are held not only on week days, but also on Saturdays.
Said Winelands EMDC spokesperson Abré Arendse: “According to the schedule laid before the EMDC-office, all subjects are being covered and classes will take place on an ongoing basis until the end of the quarter. The school also plans to hold classes during a spring school in the September holidays.”
Principal Michael Njenxa of Mbekweni Primary said that all the teachers at their school show a commitment to see that learners are catching up on their schoolwork expeditiously.
Other schools in the area are also implementing their own recovery plans for learners.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) unveiled a 12-point plan on Friday, committing itself to ensure that all teachers are competent and well-prepared and that teachers will be able to assist struggling learners.
