Young Paarl cricketers excel in England

TWO local Paarl boys are currently on the verge of taking the international cricket world by storm.

Dawie and Charl Malan, both old boys of Paarl Boys’ High, have found their way overseas and are batting their way into the international cricket scene.

Both boys believe that sportsmen should remain humble, “because you are only as good as your last match,” so to get much information from them was even harder than trying to bowl them out on the cricket pitch.

Dawie (son of dentist Dawid Malan) matriculated in 2005 and jetted off to the UK for a gap year. In 2006 he started playing and coaching the renowned Oundle School in Northamptonshire.

At school he played first team cricket for Boys’ High, captaining them in matric. Hereafter he joined Wellington Cricket Club and represented the Boland amateur team. He also played for the Boland u/18 side in 2004 and 2005 as well as rugby for their second team.

Currently it is off-season in England and Dawie is back at home were he will be playing cricket for Bellville CC, as well as assisting in coaching his old Alma Mater’s cricket first team.

His younger brother Charl completed his school career last year and joined the Fidentia Cricket Academy. After the Fidentia crash earlier this year he joined Dawie in England.

Here he batted open a place for himself at the Marylebone Cricket Club, better known to cricket worshippers as Lord’s, where he joined their young cricketers team.

Now Charl has received a scholarship of six months to play cricket for the Crusaders in Melbourne, Australia. Hereafter he will be jetting off to India for a stint at the World Cricket Academy.

It is no coincidence that the Malan brothers have excelled on the sportsfield.

They are definitely a chip off the old block, as their father himself played first class cricket for Western Province in his hey-day.

According to their mother, Janet, they have had bat sof some sort in their hands since they could walk.

Dawie has already scored 25 centuries as opening batsman and Charl was capped as taking the most wickets and for scoring the second most runs for the last season.

Liné, their younger sister, is herself an up and coming sports star, having played first team hockey for Girls’ High this year and achieving provincial tennis colours...

Both Charl and Dawie are determined to reach great heights in cricket and although it may be on foreign soil, both remain proud of their roots which remain embedded in Paarl.
