THE Celebration of the Horse and Wine, which was held on the Nelson Wine Estate in Paarl over two days last year, was so successful that the organisers have decided to make it a three day event this year, from tomorrow to Sunday.

With its magnificent gardens, sprawling lawns and majestic views the Nelson Wine Estate is the ideal venue for this event which has become one of the highlights on the Cape’s Wine and Horse lover’s calendar.

This is not just another horse competition, but a celebration at which the horse is given centre stage in recognition for the important role that it has played in our cultural heritage and continues to play today in a vast array of recreational activities.

Over 20 different horse breeds will be on display - from the largest draft horses to miniature breeds and even mules and donkeys from the McGregor sanctuary.

Almost every horse related sporting activity will be demonstrated at this show, including stunt riding, gymkhana, polo, show jumping, carriage driving, dressage and eventing.

Cultural activities from a bygone era such as wagon wheel making, whip and harness making, draft ploughing and other horse related skills will be exhibited.

And while the horsy members of the family are steeped in their favourite pastime there will be lots of other fun for the rest of the family such as quad bike rides around the farm, kiddies' entertainment, dozens of stalls, art in the garden and of course live music and wonderful poolside food and wine.

The Nelson Wine Estate (Nelson’s Creek) is situated adjacent to the R44 in Windmeul, Agter Paarl on the northern side of Paarl Mountain.

Tickets are R40 (R20 children under 12) and must be purchased at the entrance. For enquiries, call Belinda on 021-869-8453.
