Piano tradition lives on
2007-11-01
AFTER the closure of Wellington’s famous Dietmann Piano factory in the late 1980’s, it was thought that the town’s venerable tradition of piano manufacture, sales and repair had been entirely lost.
Now, an enterprising young German couple, master piano-builder Martin Witzel and his partner Bettina Schell (the daughter of former Dietmann factory manager Lothar Schell) have had the vision to re-establish the piano trade in the town.
Their shop, aptly called “Piano, Piano”, will offer a variety of services from piano tuning and technical repairs, to total overhauls, transport, and long- and short-term instrument rental, as well as technical advice and assistance for people purchasing or selling instruments. In addition, the full range of Lothar Schell upright and grand pianos (now manufactured at the Lothar Schell Piano Factory in China) will be available.
The shop will also stock a range of wood-wind, wind and string instruments.
Martin and Bettina have extensive experience in the piano trade, having worked in countries as diverse as Germany, America and China, as well as in South Africa.
The shop, which is situated on the corner of Fontein and Malherbe Street (next to To Dine for Restaurant) in Wellington, will open its doors on November 3 at 09:00.
Everyone is welcome to view and try out the exclusive range of instruments, many of which are on opening special.
